First published October 4, 2006; doi:10.1152/jn.00190.2006. Responsive, implantable stimulation devices to treat epilepsy are now in clinical trials. New evidence suggests that these devices may be more effective when they deliver therapy before seizure onset. Despite years of effort, prospective seizure prediction, which could improve device performance, remains elusive. In large part, this is explained by lack of agreement on a statistical framework for modeling seizure generation and a method for validating algorithm performance. We present a novel stochastic framework based on a three-state hidden Markov model (HMM) (representing interictal, preictal, and seizure states) with the feature that periods of increased seizure probability can transition back to the interictal state. This notion reflects clinical experience and may enhance interpretation of published seizure prediction studies. Our model accommodates clipped EEG segments and formalizes intuitive notions regarding statistical validation. We derive equations for type I and type II errors as a function of the number of seizures, duration of interictal data, and prediction horizon length and we demonstrate the model’s utility with a novel seizure detection algorithm that appeared to predicted seizure onset. We propose this framework as a vital tool for designing and validating prediction algorithms and for facilitating collaborative research in this area.

An Adaptive Approach to Increase Accuracy of Forward Algorithm for Solving Evaluation Problems on Unstable Statistical Data Set

Nowadays, Hidden Markov models are extensively utilized for modeling stochastic processes. These models help researchers establish and implement the desired theoretical foundations using Markov algorithms such as Forward one. however, Using Stability hypothesis and the mean statistic for determining the values of Markov functions on unstable statistical data set has led to a significant reducti...

مدل سازی فضایی-زمانی وقوع و مقدار بارش زمستانه در گستره ایران با استفاده از مدل مارکف پنهان

Multi site modeling of rainfall is one of the most important issues in environmental sciences especially in watershed management. For this purpose, different statistical models have been developed which involve spatial approaches in simulation and modeling of daily rainfall values. The hidden Markov is one of the multi-site daily rainfall models which in addition to simulation of daily rainfall...

Introducing Busy Customer Portfolio Using Hidden Markov Model

Due to the effective role of Markov models in customer relationship management (CRM), there is a lack of comprehensive literature review which contains all related literatures. In this paper the focus is on academic databases to find all the articles that had been published in 2011 and earlier. One hundred articles were identified and reviewed to find direct relevance for applying Markov models...

Mixed Hidden Markov Models: An Extension of the Hidden Markov Model to the Longitudinal Data Setting

Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are a useful tool for capturing the behavior of overdispersed, autocorrelated data. These models have been applied to many different problems, including speech recognition, precipitation modeling, and gene finding and profiling. Typically, HMMs are applied to individual stochastic processes; HMMs for simultaneously modeling multiple processes—as in the longitudinal d...
